Carbonor will bring together, in a single operation, 30 years of experience in pyrolysis and the production of engineered high-carbon bioreductants with the integration of CCS, and become carbon negative. Carbonor’s products will make value chains greener and more sustainable so that our everyday products have a lower carbon footprint.

Carbonor will establish biocarbon production in Norway and will integrate Aker’s carbon capture into the manufacturing process. Carbonor will supply its zero emission carbon products to the Norwegian, European and international alloy and process industries.

Carbonor is based on research collaboration with science and industry

Carbonor's operations will be the convergence of a multi-year project to develop market leading, low CO2 reductants for the alloy and process industries.  This project is the result of close collaboration between the key players in the process industry value chain and the Norwegian knowledge sector. This culmination is based on several years of research to ensure a sound base for the establishment of sustainable, low CO2 carbon reductants. Below is a summary of our two Gassnova projects that are form the foundation of this project.

Char-C

Char - C

Technical-economic feasibility study 2017-2019

The idea of producing low CO2 carbon reductants was conceived in 2015. The concept involved  Polchar and Elkem and was financed by Gassnova.

Key components of the project included; (i) how to establish a low CO2 production process, (ii) benchmarking of carbon capture technologies where Aker's carbon capture technology was selected, and (iii) Sintef conducting a life cycle analysis as well as a study of alternative locations.

Char - II

Demonstration project 2020-2022

With a successful outcome of Char-C, a demonstration project, Char II, was established to verify carbon capture.

Aker’s mobile carbon capture test unit was tied into Polchar’s char production to capture CO2 and measure capture efficiency.

Holte Consulting was engaged to assist with independent analysis, documentation and evaluation of the business model.
The study concluded with successful carbon capture in the final days of 2022.
